Common- Finding Forever CD Review

I remember the first time I heard “ I Used to Love H.E.R.” I was coming to understand Hip Hop as a movement. It was more than Dirty Dozens on playgrounds, cardboard on sidewalks, b-boxing contests and tagged freeway overpasses—it was liberation through sound.

When I heard the album “Like Water for Chocolate” in March 2000, I declared it one of Common and J Dilla’s best contributions to Hip Hop. I didn’t know water taste so sweet. It got me open like hearing Tribe Called Quest, Pete Rock or Eric B and Rakim. I listen to “The Light” today and I still get goose bumps from the initial beat. J Dilla was genius.

On Common’s latest project, he teams up with K West to create the blueprint for listeners in search of Finding Forever. Tracks like “Start the Show”, “Drivin’ Me Wild”, “I Want You”, “U, Black Maybe”, and “Misunderstood” will help you find your way to Hip Hop Lane better than Map Quest.

Through the years as the industry’s change separated the wheat from the tares, Common stayed Hip Hop with powerful lyrics that reflect everyday life. His messages plant seeds, reaping an awakening harvest. Common is a dynamic griot and emcee. His “daughter found Nemo…” I found part of Hip Hop’s forever.
